6 Affordable Honeymoon Ideas

A honeymoon is one of the best moments of a couple’s life. Spending that time together with your loved one in a place you could only see in television and movies. What could be better than that? Unfortunately in today’s economy, it isn’t wise to spend your money frivolously. So a lot of your dream honeymoon trips may not be realistic or advisable. Luckily, there are a number of less expensive alternatives that you can choose from.

Have a Staycation

Who says that you have to leave your home to go on a honeymoon? That may sound strange to a lot of people, but think about. You’ll be away from work for a few weeks and you will be disconnected from the outside world. This will give you and your spouse to spend more time together doing a project, setting up your dream home or unwinding after the wedding. It may not sound as impressive going to a 5-star hotel, but you will receive as much enjoyment from it. If a family member or close friend has a beach house or mountain retreat, you can even consider asking them if you can stay there for a few days.

Go to a Local Resort

Find a resort in your city and book a day for you and your spouse. Even though these may not be the cheapest places to stay, it is much better than booking a flight and being charged with airfare and travel costs. And if you get the honeymoon package, you will get free perks and special attention. You’ll come back rejuvenated and refreshed without all the hassles and costs of traveling. You don’t need to fly half way across the world to be treated like royalty.

Alternative Island Retreat

One of the most important things to remember is that you do not need to go to Hawaii or Tahiti to get the island experience. You can just as easily book an affordable flight and sleep in an affordable hotel. If you are not in the mood for that, then you can go to your local beach. Try something within the country or even a lower-budget beach destination that’s not too far away. Remember that paradise is all about how you feel and not where you are.

Charity or Volunteer

Instead of treating yourselves, you can treat others. You can use this time together to volunteer for a week at a local charity or community. Help resort a park or landmark to its original state, volunteer at a homeless or animal shelter. This experience will allow you and your spouse to not only grow as a couple, but help your community grow and flourish. It will give you and your spouse a memorable experience that you will cherish.

Go on a Retreat

If you don’t really care about going to a hotel or an island for your honeymoon, why not go on a retreat? Spend the day together at a spa, yoga retreat, vineyard, backpacking or whatever hobby you are into. Find something local that’s close to you. You can hike in the Hudson Valley on the east coast or go rock climbing on the west coast.

Festivals and Special Events

Every city has its special event or festival throughout the year. If you time it just right, you could end up going to one of these events for your honeymoon. Just imagine spending your honeymoon at SXSW, Burning Man, Mardi Gras, Time Square on New Year’s Eve, a movie premiere or any number of place you can think of. Most people take advantage of these things because they happen so frequently, but don’t regret taking the opportunity. Just being a part of these festivals will feel like a celebration, hopefully without you having to spend too much.

Regardless of where you go or what you do, your honeymoon is one of the best times in your life. Enjoy being together and reliving the beautiful moments from your wedding.
